Some garments begin with a cloth. This one begins with a coffee.

The journey starts in India, with handwoven cotton in its natural form — unbleached and free from pre-treatment. From there, the cloth makes its way to Waddesdon, where its transformation continues slowly and entirely by hand.

The fabric is first mordanted with soybeans, a quiet three-day process that prepares the fibres to receive colour. Then comes the waiting — more than two weeks of resting and curing before the cloth is ready to be made into its final form.

Once the kimono is almost complete, it is immersed in a rich bath of ground coffee, prepared much like a French press. Left to steep for more than 24 hours, the cloth gradually takes on its warm, earthy tone. There is something wonderfully intimate about this process — a familiar everyday ritual becoming colour, held in the fibres of the garment.

The result is a softly structured kimono in natural cotton, its surface carrying the gentle variations of a dye made by hand. No two pieces will be quite alike. The depth and movement of the colour may shift across the cloth, revealing traces of the process rather than concealing them.

A vintage hand-embroidered pashmina trim finishes the pocket, bringing another story into the garment — something old, intricate and treasured, given a new place in everyday life.

The kimono is finally washed in salt and vinegar to help set the colour, then line dried before making its way out into the world.

Because the dyeing is entirely natural and done by hand, variations and subtle inconsistencies in colour are to be expected. They are not imperfections, but part of the beauty of working slowly and allowing the material to respond in its own way.

Every part of the dyeing and making process is carried out by hand in Waddesdon, England.

A garment shaped by time, touch and the quiet rituals of making.
